How Telligen QI Connect™ Partners are Addressing Social Isolation – Ideas and Opportunities You Can Bring to Your Community

Facilitators: Risa Hayes and Meredith Koob

Tuesday, January 12, 2020 | 1-2:30 MST, 2-3:30 CT

Research shows that social isolation causes real harm to not only our mental well-being, but also our physical heath, resulting in depression, anxiety, psychosis, , cardiovascular disease, stroke, cognitive decline, and higher risks of premature mortality.  Older adults, especially those in long-term care, have been especially impacted.

In addition to summarizing the great ideas that you, our Telligen QI Connect™ partners, shared for addressing social isolation in the December Community CONNECT statewide meetings, this will be an interactive event highlighting two programs targeted to address social isolation.

  • Hug Tunnel Events: after hearing about the Hug Tunnel in Brazil, a safe way to hug, a small Colorado group decided to try it out on their own. After receiving guidance from The Colorado Department of Health and Environment, the group built and piloted Hug Tunnels at a few long-term care facilities.  Attendees will hear about the journey to safe hugs including, who to partner with, details of building your own Hug Tunnel and setting up events, inspiring stories from the events, hands on tools for implementation, and what this is teaching us for the long-term.
  • CircleTalk™: this was an intervention designed to address social isolation in older adults long before the pandemic. Hear how Circles have been adapted from an in person older adult interaction to a safely connected virtual experience.  There will be an interactive demonstration of a CircleTalk™ activity that will allow you to feel what Circles entail.  In addition, CircleTalk™ has graciously offered an exclusive opportunity for five Telligen QI Connect™ partners to bring a Circle to their long-term care facility at no charge.  Learn how to express your interest in this pilot opportunity or how any staff member from your organization can become trained virtually to become a CircleTalk™ facilitator.
