Survey Uncovers Vaccine Hesitancy Among Long-Term Care Staff

An innovative study conducted last year by the Indiana Department of Health surveyed 8,243 Indiana nursing home and assisted living facility staff members (a 33 percent response rate) via text message and email about their willingness to receive an approved COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it was available. Overall, 45 percent of respondents indicated they would immediately receive an approved COVID‐19 vaccine. Of those unwilling to take the vaccine when first available, 44 percent would consider it in the future. The primary reason for vaccine hesitancy was concerns about side effects (70 percent). While survey findings only covered one state, they suggest a role for education to increase vaccine acceptance among caregivers. Read more
